I grew up in the outskirts of Rio during the 1980s. Now, I recall with gratitude the sense of joy, the careless – and, in hindsight, dangerous – freedom that we enjoyed in our daily lives. I feel greatly blessed for the creative ways that we, children, devised to entertain ourselves amid so much social struggle. This piece celebrates those days of barefoot soccer playing on dirt roads.
